Are indoor plants good for your health?

You’ve heard them everywhere: the benefits of growing your own plants at home. As the popularity of these homeplants grows, research suggests that indoor plants can be good for your health.

Whether you want to create a beautiful home landscape with ferns and bamboo plants, or you simply like the smell of a jasmine plant while it’s in bloom, growing your own indoor plants can provide a whole host of benefits for your physical, mental and emotional well-being.

This article will share tips and ideas to encourage you to give indoor plants a try, and highlight the most common and surprising uses for indoor plants.

Why grow your own indoor plants?

Why grow your own indoor plants?

Plants are natural resources to us – they provide oxygen, absorb carbon dioxide, purify the air, make our homes comfortable, improve our productivity, as well as adding to our physical appearance and providing a source of nourishment.

While growing your own indoor plants is beneficial to your physical health, and you get to enjoy the benefits from the moment you plant them, your mental and emotional health will also improve as you bond with the plants.

Studies suggest that the benefits of plants, both in their form as a natural resource and in the benefits they provide, is greater than in most other resources. Whether you’re the type to enjoy plants indoors or you’re not so sure you’re into them, there are plenty of reasons to give indoor plants a go.

Indoor plants can improve your mental and emotional health

There are a number of reasons that indoor plants are good for your mental and emotional health, some of which we’ve mentioned above, including:

1. They can help us slow down and improve our attention

We’ve all heard of the benefits of nature, especially when it comes to our mental health. We may find that a 30-minute walk through the woods in the rain will help you to better focus and feel more relaxed. And while in the short term a walk in the countryside can have a similar effect, it’s not the same thing as having a plant of your own in your own home.

Whether it’s a potted plant or one that you’ve managed to successfully grow in a garden, getting in touch with nature can help us to slow down.

2. They can provide you with a sense of wellbeing

Indoor plants provide you with a sense of being in contact with nature, even if it’s just a plant.

You might remember your own first ever garden, and the time you looked up at that first plant and thought that it seemed to have all the answers to everything in the world.

There are countless ways that plants and nature are associated with feelings of wellbeing, including the calming or energising nature of certain plants. For example, lavender, in particular, has been linked to a feeling of calm, peace, wellbeing and relaxation.

But it’s not just about the plant. If you’ve managed to successfully grow one in your own home, you’ll see that it will help to produce feelings of wellbeing through the way that it absorbs sunlight.

However, if you’re using your home as a place of work, a visit to your nearest garden centre, or even a nearby park, can provide you with a better sense of wellbeing. If you’re struggling to see how your home might help your mental health, then take a look at our ‘How to Grow a Plant’ leaflet.

3. They can help you get out of yourself

Just like we discussed earlier, being in touch with nature helps to improve your social skills and reduce stress. And by improving your social skills, you might also find that you’re feeling less lonely.

If you’re worried that you’ll stop socialising if you start to feel a bit lonely, try and think of how plants may benefit you. Maybe you could visit your local park. It’s likely to offer you much-needed company.

4. They can help you fall asleep

If you’re a light sleeper and you find that you’re not getting enough sleep, then try growing some plants in your room.

A study by the University of Florida found that rooms that contained plants and gardens often experienced a drop in the amount of lighting that people used. This allowed their body to start sleeping better.

5. They can help you stay healthy

Our bodies need a certain level of sunlight to thrive. So, in our busy lives, we’re rarely able to properly spend time outside. However, if you find yourself feeling depressed, tired or unwell, just spend more time outdoors.

Our bodies use sunlight to produce hormones and vitamin D. Even if you don’t grow plants inside, try finding a room in your house that gets plenty of sunlight. You may find that spending some time in the fresh air will help you feel better.

How to Grow a Plant

1. Decide what plants you’d like to grow

Before you buy any plants, you’ll need to decide what you want to grow. There are so many options, and the types of plants you can grow change a lot from place to place.

The website Gardeners’ World has a list of plants that have been specifically bred to be easy to grow. We’ve provided a link to it in the box below.

2. Follow the instructions

It’s always best to follow the instructions provided with your plants. The Gardeners’ World page should be a good starting point.

3. Select the best space

You can grow anything in a garden. However, your space needs to be big enough to support a plant in its entirety. If your plants are too small, they won’t be able to grow properly.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the idea of starting your own garden, here are some tips.

You don’t need to do it all at once. You can start with a small portion of your garden and spend time on it slowly.

Make the space look nice first. This will encourage you to continue.

4. Buy your seeds

Seeds are cheap, and they’re the base for almost every plant. You can buy seeds in packets and plant them directly into the soil. You’ll also need some compost to nurture your seeds.

You can find information on how to buy and grow seeds in the link in the box below.

5. Prepare the ground

You’ll need to make sure that you’ve got all of the soil you’re going to use available. You can do this by composting or spreading manure.

You’ll also need to dig out a small hole and place your plant seeds in. You can do this by hand or use a plant grower’s spade.

After you plant the seeds, add some manure and compost to the hole so that they can develop properly.

6. Water the soil

After planting your seeds, you’ll want to water the ground thoroughly. Ensure that all of the plant roots have enough water.

To grow healthy plants, you can soak the soil thoroughly. You can use a watering can or a water sprinkler.

7. Don’t forget to check the plant’s progress
