Woodcock, scientific name Scolopax rusticola of the family Scolopacidaeit is a bird that emits very characteristic and unique cries of their kind. The best known is the classic "cruà - cruà - cruà" hence the term croule (reported here) emitted by the male at dawn and dusk, from April to July, in the nuptial parade to attract the female to mating which resembles the croaking of a frog. Beyond this she can also emit a high-pitched double whistle or a typical "hello-cia-ciak" when frightened.
