If you are looking to grow a low-maintenance, hardy-flowering perennial, try statice. Statice is probably the number-one flower used in dried arrangements, as it can last for a very long time. It comes in a variety of species and colors. Its blooms range in colors of yellow, purple and pink, and some have small white or yellow flowers inside of the bloom. For a novice gardener, or one who desires an easy plant to grow, statice is a smart choice.
Wait until all signs of frost have passed your area before planting statice plants or sowing its seeds into the ground. It will not grow in cold, freezing temperatures.
Choose an area in your garden to plant the statice plants that receives full sunlight for most of the day. The plants will not do well or give you many blooms if planted in shady conditions where no sunlight is available.
Plant your statice plants in soil that is average, sandy and most importantly, drains well. There is no need to amend the soil when planting your statice plants into it. Heavy soils such as clay will need to be amended with sand to allow for proper drainage, or the plants can develop root rot and will eventually die.
Water your statice plants in well once you have planted them. Water the plant every other day for the first 2 weeks after it has been planted. They are quite drought tolerant once they have established themselves and will only need water once or twice per week.
Apply a light application of fertilizer designed for blooming plants in the spring. Purchase a fertilizer that has a high number in the middle. This is the amount of phosphorus in it and this is what is needed for the plant to produce more blooms. You can also use water soluble fertilizer sprayed over the entire plant every couple of weeks, instead of the granular variety.
Before you transplant your lavender seedlings, or plant your lavender cuttings, make sure you have the right type of pot. Plant lavender in a container made from a material that breathes, such as terra cotta. Repot to a larger container every spring to allow the plant to reach its full blooming and growth potential.
Load your pot with a sterile potting mix, or try this one from V. J. Billings, owner of Mountain Valley Growers organic nursery: Mix approximately 60% peat moss with 40% perlite, with a couple of handfuls of homemade compost thrown in. If you don't add compost when you pot, you'll need to fertilize every three weeks or so with a diluted fish or seaweed emulsion.
Once your lavender is settled into its final location, it will likely grow slowly in the first year, but most plants will still bloom. Year two and beyond, expect greater growth and bigger blooms.
