In Russia today there are about 260 varieties of potatoes, 7 of them can be eaten at the end of July, since they have an early ripening period. Potatoes Zhukovsky is one of them, and with all its positive characteristics and qualities, it does not require special care. What is the description and features of this one of the best varieties of domestic selection?

If we talk about the positive qualities of this early variety, then we can dwell on its extreme unpretentiousness to growing conditions. That is why they are engaged in planting on the territory of all Eurasia. Also, this early variety has a good degree of adaptability to different types of land. If you adhere to just a few features of care, then it is quite possible to get about 40 tons of root crops from 1 hectare of area. Also, the potatoes of this wonderful variety are well preserved without losing their presentable appearance and excellent taste characteristics. Unfortunately, this early seed variety can suffer from a fungal disease such as late blight.

But this trouble can really be avoided if only healthy roots are selected before planting. The early ripening of this kind of potato crop can also help if all the tops are removed a week before the intended harvest. But at the same time, he has excellent immunity to other, no less insidious ailments - potato nematode, cancer, Rhizoctonia, Alternaria. In addition to all that has been said about seed potatoes of this variety, mention should be made of its drought resistance. The exception is dry weather in the second half of July, when experts still advise to do the obligatory morning watering.

If we talk about the description of the variety, then it is worth starting with the characteristics of the shoots. Shrubs of this early variety are able to grow not very tall, as well as slightly branched. Flowering is observed quite abundant, on the floor of spreading bushes of medium height, you can see small leaves that have a dark green color, as well as red-purple flowers, which have white tips, which are collected in beautiful inflorescences. Such a picture in potatoes of this variety can be observed a month after the emergence of shoots. It is also noteworthy that this variety is not able to form fruits from inflorescences. This is with regard to the description of shoots and bushes.

We pass on to the description of the tubers. Under each of the bushes of the Zhukovsky root crop, about 10 tubers may appear. They are quite large - each weighing on average from 100 to 150 grams. This variety of seed potatoes has regular oval roots, they are pleasant and smooth to the touch, and also have a light pink, sometimes beige color. In the latter case, the presence of sufficiently bright eyes should be added to the description of the tuber. If you carry out a little watering, then the yield may be slightly lower, and if proper conditions are created for this early variety, it may be higher than average.

Although experts classify such a variety as pink, if you focus on the description of its tubers, you can understand that they do not have a rich color. As for the description of the pulp, its characteristics are as follows - it has a pure white tint without any inclusions, has a wonderful taste, does not darken on the cuts, does not boil during cooking. The starch content in the tubers of this seed potato is about 15%.

The above is a description of a wonderful potato variety, I am guided by which, you cannot confuse its root crops with any others. It is recommended to plant tubers in mid-spring. Before that, they are advised to germinate by putting them in boxes, and then leaving them in a comfortable room for a week. Potatoes are considered ready to plant when the sprout is about 1 centimeter long. They are also advised to treat them with an insecticide that can protect them from insects in the future. It should be planted at a medium length and with an average density, and to protect it from frost, it is best to cover the site with a special agrofibre.

If we talk about measures for the care of this magnificent vegetable, then they are as follows. First of all, for normal full-fledged growth and development, this potato variety needs weeding and loosening of the soil, which must be carried out long before the first shoots hatch.

During weeding, this covering material is removed and then placed back and remains on the site until the threat of frost damage to vegetables passes.

Also, plants must be protected from harmful insects by treating them for this with preparations specially created for such cases. It is also necessary to carry out hilling, as well as watering in moderate doses. At the end of July, a week before the expected harvest, it is recommended to remove all tops in order to prevent the appearance of dangerous late blight. The timing of harvesting Zhukovsky's potatoes - for an early harvest, it is produced from about 1 to 21 July, and for seed - from 1 to 14 August. As practice and experience of many gardeners show, it is possible to grow a rich harvest of this kind of root crop even on a small area of a personal plot.

What are the varieties of potatoes and how to determine the best ones? Find out from the video below.

Zhukovsky is an early potato, the characteristics of which are described below. An early variety can be grown in a variety of climates.

The peel of a pink hue, as stated in the description of the variety, is distinguished by its thinness and smoothness. Among pink tubers, red ones can also be found.

The mass of each potato reaches 165-220 g. The shape of the fruits is harmonious, round-oval.

During cooking, the potatoes are not boiled, fully retaining a dense consistency. Small eyes are located over the entire surface in small numbers. It is worth noting that after cutting the tubers, the pulp retains a white tint for a long time.

For reference! The tubers are resistant to damage, which makes it possible to transport them over long distances.

The height of semi-spreading plants is average. There are a small number of highly branched stems. The leaf plates are painted in a dark green palette. On them you can see well-developed veins.

The flowering of the potato variety Zhukovsky is short-term and abundant. The inflorescences are painted in red-purple tones, and the white tips stand out brightly against their background. Flowers are compact and look very elegant.

  • Nutritional value

According to the characteristics of the Zhukovsky potato variety, the tubers contain almost 15-16% starch, a large amount of vitamins and organic acids, bioflavonoids, and fiber.

The products do not contain cholesterol and fat.

Attention! Low calorie content allows you to include potatoes in the menu for people who want to lose weight.

The harvest of early seed potatoes Zhukovsky is always stable. The potatoes dug from the beds are of good quality.

Up to 600-610 centners of potato tubers can be harvested from each hectare. According to reviews of agronomists, the variety is really profitable to grow on an industrial scale.

  • Disease and pest resistance

Most often, vegetable crops of other varieties suffer from cancer, scab, nematodes and rhizoctonia. Zhukovsky is not susceptible to these diseases, however, plantings may suffer from late blight, viral disease, alternaria.

A high-yielding variety is able to withstand a prolonged dry period and low temperatures. This is an undoubted advantage, because early varieties are planted during a period when the weather is still unstable.

Even violations on the part of the frequency of soil moistening are not capable of reducing the yield.

  • Long-term storage

The harvested and dried tubers can retain their presentation for 8 months. However, to achieve this result, it is important to comply with storage conditions.

Important! Even the presence of small scratches on the surface of the tubers will not provoke the death of root crops.

An early potato variety Zhukovsky was bred by a selection group for cultivation in a temperate zone. That is why you can safely plant tubers in the following regions:

  • Uralsk
  • Volgo-Vyatsky
  • Central
  • Middle Volga
  • Northwestern and Far Eastern districts.

In the East Siberian Territory, poor germination of the vegetable crop of this variety is noted.

Important! Each hundred square meters can be harvested up to 380 kg of Zhukovsky potato crop.

Description of the variety

Zhukovsky differs from most varieties of potatoes in that it has an extended ripening period. During the growing season, the stolons spread to the sides, when planted in straw, thanks to this property, it becomes possible to collect several potatoes from the nest without digging a bush. The entire growing season takes almost 90 days, but you should not wait for all tubers to fully ripen. If the summer is rainy, ripe roots can rot.

The bushes are medium-sized, from 40 to 60 cm, semi-spreading, branchy shoots, numerous medium-sized leaves with embossed veins, glossy, saturated dark green color. The inflorescences are loose, the flowering period is short, the corolla is red-violet, the tips of the petals are white. Tubers are different in size and shape, but mostly round-oval with a blunt tip, 120–160 g each, some specimens can reach a mass of 400–600 g. The skin is thin and firm, slightly rough, reddish-lilac, bright. There are few eyes, they are shallow, of a more saturated shade. The pulp is white, juicy, not mealy.

In the Central regions, the average yield is 14–32 tons per 100 m², the maximum figures were recorded in Lipetsk - 380 kg per 100 m². According to the description of the variety of gardeners from the south, from 1 seed potato, you can collect 4–5, 5 kg of tubers. Appointment dining, Zhukovsky is suitable for frying, cooking chips, good baked and boiled. During heat treatment, the pulp does not crumble, does not lose its juiciness and does not darken.

  • up to 95% of root crops (of the total crop) have an excellent presentation, in general marketability is estimated at 90-92%
  • tubers do not deteriorate during transportation, they are kept well. Before storing, the potatoes are sorted out, thrown away or immediately used all damaged potatoes, the rest are dried under a canopy. The room should be dry and dark, the temperature should be kept at the level of 2-5˚С. In such conditions, the crop will lie for 6-7 months, will not rot and will not become sluggish.
  • immunity to almost all typical diseases and pests is excellent, even in epidemic years it is weakly affected by nematodes, rhizoctonia, scab and potato cancer
  • undemandingness
  • tubers are resistant to mechanical damage, automatic harvesting is allowed
  • the variety does not degenerate for a long time
  • extended fruiting, early ripening
  • consistently high yields in difficult climatic conditions
  • versatility in use.

Among the shortcomings, one can note a weak resistance to late blight, the fungus is dangerous when plantings are thickened, beds overgrown with weeds, high soil and air humidity in warm weather. Another disadvantage is the low starch content (10-14%). The taste in many sources is described as mediocre or even bland, although the opinions of gardeners on this matter differ, many give a tasting score of 4-5 points.

Agrotechnics of cultivation and care

Potatoes of the Zhukovsky early variety are ideal for obtaining very early harvests - the first young tubers can be harvested by gardeners as early as July. To do this, in the fall, they prepare the beds, choosing sunny areas of the garden that are well blown by the wind. The type of soil does not really matter, potatoes grow well and bear fruit on any of them. But it shows the best results on light-textured soils, sandy loams and loams, with a slightly acidic reaction.

Under the culture, before digging, well-rotted manure is introduced in an amount of up to 10 kg per 1 m 2 of the area of the beds, as well as phosphorus-potassium fertilizers at the full rate (superphosphate, potassium sulfate) or ash is added.

In the spring, potatoes must be germinated before planting. This allows not only to shift the maturation of the crop to an earlier period, but also to immediately reject defective and diseased tubers. Vernalization begins 20-30 days before the upcoming planting of potatoes in the ground, for early production - 45 days before.

First, the tubers are taken out of the cellar and carefully examined. Only healthy specimens are left without visible traces of disease and mechanical damage. Then they are pickled in solutions of fungicides or soaked in potassium permanganate. Further, the selected seed potatoes of the Zhukovsky variety are kept in the light at a temperature of 12-17 ° C, periodically moistened with a spray bottle. Many gardeners also use growth regulators to stimulate more friendly sprouting of the eyes, and they also sprout potatoes in boxes of peat, which allows them to get strong sprouts and a good root system in plants.

They begin to plant potatoes in the beds in April - May. This variety is cold-resistant, therefore, it can be planted even at a soil temperature of 5-7 ° C. In this case, for an earlier emergence of seedlings, the rows are covered with a film, agrofibre, or mulching is used. When preplanting tubers with insecticides against the Colorado potato beetle and other pests, preference is given to drugs with a minimum period of protection.

On light soils, Zhukovsky early potatoes are planted using standard technology - in furrows or holes. On heavy clay soils, in regions with a large amount of precipitation, as well as in areas with a close occurrence of groundwater, ridges are cut. The planting material is buried in the ground by 6-8 cm, 3-4 tubers are placed in the rows at 1 meter, 75-80 cm are left between the rows.

In the future, caring for Zhukovsky potatoes comes down to regular loosening of the soil, weeding, hilling plants, top dressing and, if necessary, watering.

The first hilling is carried out when the bushes reach 15-20 cm, then it is repeated 1 or 2 more times. The formation of the ridges is completed by the time the potatoes begin to bloom. After the rains, the soil is loosened in order to break up the dried soil crust and give air to the roots.

During the growing season, potato bushes are fed 3 times.

  • First, nitrogen fertilizers are applied. It can be rotted manure, liquid mullein, bird droppings. Of mineral fertilizers, potash or ammonium nitrate, ammophos, crystallone are used.
  • Before the beginning of budding, plants are fed with phosphorus-potassium compounds - ash, superphosphate and potassium sulfate, monopotassium phosphate.
  • After the end of flowering, potato plantings are fertilized with complex preparations containing all three main components (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium) and trace elements. If the site has sandy soils, potassium-magnesium supplements are used.

In the cold and rainy season, it is imperative to carry out preventive treatment of plantings against late blight. Provided that the tubers were not treated with insecticides before planting, in May they begin to spray the plants with preparations against the Colorado potato beetle.

If the year turned out to be hot and dry, the potatoes are watered several times during the season. He especially needs moisture at the time of the growth of green mass, as well as during the formation of tubers. Therefore, irrigation is carried out, if necessary, after the first hilling, before and after the flowering of plants.

Digging for early potatoes begins in July, tubers intended for winter storage are harvested in early August. 1-2 weeks before that, the tops are broken at the base or cut off completely. This makes it possible for the tubers to finally ripen and acquire a dense skin. Dig out the harvest of potatoes in dry weather with a pitchfork or shovels. Immediately inspected and sorted. Separately, large and small healthy tubers are folded, sick ones damaged by pests or tools - they are used first. They will not lie for a long time, but they can ruin the rest of the potatoes.

After harvesting, the tubers are stored in vegetable nets, rack wooden or plastic boxes. Placed in the cellar or in the basement, in the conditions of apartments - on the insulated balcony. Zhukovsky potatoes lie well enough, but the following conditions are considered ideal for its long-term preservation: good ventilation, complete darkness, humidity and air temperature - up to 90% and 3-5 ° C.

Advantages and disadvantages

No matter how much you tell them what early Zhukovsky potatoes are, the description will look somewhat one-sided. Why? Yes, because it is usually customary to honestly warn: they say, with all the advantages, there are such and such problematic qualities. In this case, it is very difficult to find something suitable in the "Disadvantages" section.

But you can talk about the merits for a long time and with pleasure - it's not for nothing that these potatoes are planted, and then they are eaten with pleasure from the North Caucasus to the Far East. "Zhukovsky" has gained well-deserved popularity, because this variety:

  • easily takes root on any soil
  • does not make high demands in the growing process
  • can do without watering at all if there is precipitation
  • extremely resistant to diseases and pests
  • tolerates heat and cold
  • gives a high yield
  • tubers are resistant to mechanical damage during harvesting
  • harvest under the right conditions will last until mid-spring.

Zhukovsky potatoes are good in any dish and in any form. Large beautiful snow-white potatoes will decorate the table.

Characteristics of varieties

Early potato varieties differ in terms of ripening:

  • ultra early give a crop within 45-55 days after the shoots appear (these are Magda, Osiris, Impala, Colombo, Meteor, Felox, Fresco, Colette, Bellarosa, Alena, Ariel)
  • early maturing potatoes are ready to eat in 50-60 days (Red Scarlet, Luck, Evolution, Romano, Red Lady, Charodey, Madeline, Lyubava, Zhukovsky Early)
  • mid-early potatoes can be consumed in 60-85 days (Nevsky, Santa, Ryabinushka, Ilyinsky, Krasavchik, Blue Danube, Jelly, Vasilek).

Tubers are classified according to the purpose of cultivation:

  • table varieties containing a lot of vitamin C are used for cooking, they have excellent taste characteristics
  • fodder potatoes are used in the livestock sector as livestock feed, they are high in protein and dry matter
  • technical varieties are distinguished by increased starchiness, therefore they are used for processing - starch and alcohol are obtained from them
  • varieties of universal use are the golden mean between table, technical and fodder potatoes - the content of starch, vitamin C, dry matter is at an average level.

Laura is a German medium-early ripening variety. Tall, spreading bushes are distinguished by multi-colored petals: from white to light purple. The red peel effectively sets off the rich yellow color of the pulp, which is very tasty and aromatic. Up to 20 even, elongated-oval tubers grow in one nest. The crop is harvested no later than 80 days from the time of planting and stored without loss for up to six months. Digging can be done much earlier. Potatoes have good resistance to viral infections and diseases. Undemanding to weather conditions, but hardly tolerates drought. The average yield of the variety is 300–400 c / ha.

It is also worth noting such mid-late varieties as Seagull, Saturna, Valentina, Fakel, Skazka.

Another one of the best representatives of late-ripening potato varieties is Zdabytok. Geographically, this potato variety grows in the central part of the country. The tubers have a pronounced oblong shape, the peel is yellow, the flesh is light yellow. This variety contains a large amount of starch, up to 25%. Also Belorussky, Vytok, Orbitu, Temp, Lorkh, Olev can be attributed to this group of late-ripening potato varieties. They are characterized by the following signs: round shape, average tuber size - 90 - 130 grams, white flesh, not darkening on the cut, small eyes on the surface.

Variety of potato varieties

The cultivation of early varieties of potatoes provides the population with this product already in the first half of the summer. Tubers contain a large amount of vitamin C. Such potato is recommended to be eaten in the peel. Longer ripening varieties account for the majority of the potato crop. These tubers are high in dry matter, protein and starch.

In order not to be mistaken when choosing a potato variety, it is necessary to study the soil and climatic conditions of the place for the germination of the crop. There are varieties that germinate well in sandy loam soils, others only in fertilized, strong soils. The harvest will depend on the correct choice of the variety. Early varieties are worse stored in winter, they are grown as a "delicacy" for the summer. For late varieties, it is necessary to prepare not only the soil, but also the storage conditions. But with proper cultivation of late varieties and compliance with all agrotechnical requirements, you will get the highest yield with long-term storage.
